The mortar is turned from beech — the traditional European kitchen timber, smooth and close‑grained — with a rounded belly for weight and a wide, flared rim that stops spices leaping out as you grind. It sits on a turned foot, so it stays planted on the worktop.

The pestle is maple, which is harder and paler than the beech, with a full rounded grinding end and three decorative rings at the handle. Together they make short work of whole spices, garlic and salt pastes, pestos and spice rubs.

Both pieces are finished with food‑safe Odie’s Oil. Give the set a quick seasoning before first use — grind a handful of dry rice — and it will serve for years; the full care guide is here.
