This vase began as an ash tree that came down in Storm Agnes. Rather than see it cut up for firewood, I saved it, cut it into blanks and let it dry naturally — ash takes its time — before it went anywhere near the lathe.

It’s turned to a round‑bodied form with a narrow neck and a small flared lip, and the bold striped grain that ash is loved for runs all the way round. The finish is Odie’s Oil, which deepens the colour and gives the surface a soft, natural sheen.

It’s a dry vase, made for a single stem or a small bunch of dried flowers, grasses or twigs — no water. One tree, one storm, one vase.
