Explore wooden gifts made to orderFor the cook
A serious cook wants tools, not ornaments. A hardwood chopping board they’ll use every day is the obvious one — an oak and sapele board is handsome enough for the table and tough enough for the bench. A wooden pestle and mortar is the less obvious one: quieter and kinder to the worktop than granite, and a pleasure to use for spices, garlic and pesto.
For the host
People who love having friends round always need one more board. A charcuterie or cheese board with a handle looks generous the moment it’s on the table, and if you tuck a card in with the 3‑3‑3 rule, you’ve given them the gift and the idea for using it. At Christmas, add the festive cheese board guide instead.
For the home
A hand‑turned bowl is a gift that doesn’t need explaining — fruit, keys, sweets, or nothing at all. For a new home, a twig vase with a few dried stems is small, personal and impossible to get wrong; the storm‑felled ash vases come with a story attached, which is half the pleasure of giving them.
For weddings and anniversaries
Wood is the traditional gift for a fifth wedding anniversary, and a personalised board — names and a date engraved on a handmade hardwood board — has become the classic way to mark it. The same idea works for a wedding gift, a housewarming for a couple, or a retirement. Commissions are welcome; a personalised board is exactly the sort of thing I make most often.
A gift that keeps improving
Include the care instructions.
A wooden gift lasts decades if it’s looked after and years if it isn’t. Print or link the care guide and pop it in the box — it takes a minute and makes the whole gift last.
Small gifts and stocking fillers
Honey dippers, small twig vases and little turned bowls sit comfortably in the stocking‑filler bracket and still feel special because someone made them. Follow the workshop on Facebook for what’s coming off the bench and where I’ll be at market.
When to order
Ready‑made pieces on Etsy go out as soon as shipping is agreed. Made‑to‑order boards need making, so allow a few weeks before you need them — and for Christmas, order in the autumn rather than December. Personalised and commissioned pieces take longer again, because we’ll talk about size, timber and wording first; the earlier the conversation starts, the better.
Frequently asked questions
What is the traditional gift for a fifth wedding anniversary?
Wood. A personalised hardwood serving board — names and the date engraved — is the classic way to mark it.
Can you engrave or personalise a board?
Yes. Engraved names, dates and short messages are the most common commission. Get in touch with what you have in mind and I’ll come back with options and a price.
How far in advance should I order a wooden gift?
Ready‑made pieces ship once the postage is agreed. Allow a few weeks for made‑to‑order boards and longer for personalised commissions — for Christmas, start the conversation in the autumn.
